A friend of mine writes to ask if I knew that Michael Cimino, director of The Deer Hunter and Heaven's Gate, has had a sex change operation. I tell him no, I didn't know that and look up some recent pictures of the director. Woman or not, he bears a startling resemblance to Barry Manilow. No film director who reshoots so much footage as to bankrupt an entire studio should ever be let within a 20-mile radius of a plastic surgeon.
